Start here (10 minutes):
  1. If your site has a chatbot, make its first message say it is an AI, not a person, and keep an "AI assistant" label on the chat (wording).
  2. If an AI voice answers or makes calls, say so at the start, and get consent before any outbound call (script).
  3. Never use AI to write reviews, or to show an AI person as a real customer.
  4. Post a short, dated How We Use AI page (free sample).
  5. If you hire in Illinois, New York City or Ontario, read the hiring rules (Illinois, NYC, Ontario).
Where the rules stand: most US small businesses have no general duty to label AI content. Specific rules do apply in specific places. Maine requires a chatbot to say it is not a person when a customer could be misled, New Jersey requires bots used to sell to identify themselves, and Utah requires a straight answer when a customer asks. Illinois and New York City regulate AI in hiring. The EU's Article 50 transparency duties started applying on August 2, 2026, and YouTube, Meta, TikTok and Google Merchant Center have their own labels.
